A few years ago i went to visit my friend Stacey and she had plastic bags of water over her doors. I was completely mystified and she explained that the water in the clear plastic bag reflected the water in the flies eyes and they didnt like to come near it, thus keeping them out of the house! I was immediately sold and ran home to tack baggies of water over all of my doors too. Now that i am aware of this phenomena that really does seem to work, i see it all over the place. Such cleverness.
So I was at one of my favorite mexican restaurants, Aqui, here in portland and they upped the anti on the aesthetics. Instead of plastic baggies, these clever ladies filled mason jars with water and strung them up with wire around the patio. I am thinking at night you could add a floating candle to the jar too.
Of course i had to try this myself and i have a serious fly issue on my patio! i bought 5 mason jars strung them up with wire and used old wire coat hangers to attach them to the patio cover. I also added a little bead tassle because i do things like that. I think they turned out kind of cute. The true test will be from the flies…stay tuned!
